Waterloo Regional Police were kept busy after a “series of disturbances” in Victoria Park on Canada Day, all involving the use, or perhaps the misuse, of fireworks. Perhaps looking to stock up for those disturbances, WRPS are also looking into a break-in at one of those pop-up fireworks shops on the weekend.
Based on the records, last month was the sixth hottest June ever experienced in the region.
The data of some 200,000 patients using Ontario Health atHome was breached back in March, but it seems that the only reason we know that now is because of a Liberal MPP.

This week on Open Sources Guelph, Scotty Hertz and I will be talking about awards. “But wait,” you say, “Don’t you do the awards at the end of the year?!” Well yes, for 10 years now we have done the annual awards show at the end of the year, but we will hope to start a summer tradition with a midyear pause to consider the winners and losers of 2025 so far. We will look for reasons to hope, or at the very least some misery we can enjoy.

Guelph Royals (IBL): It’s been a busy week for the Royals with mixed results. They did extend their winning streak to five after beating the Baycats on Tuesday and then mopping up the Maple Leafs on both Friday and Saturday, but they hit another skid on Sunday when the got blasted by the Barnstormers and then got mauled by the Panthers on Tuesday. Tonight, it’s back to the Baycats, this time in Barrie, as the Royals seek to rise through the ranks now in seventh and just 2.4 points behind the Cardinals. Also, if you feel like nominating a Royal to take part in this year’s All-Star Game, you have until midnight on Monday to fill out a ballot!
Guelph United FC (League1 Ontario): Technically, Hamilton United is still winless for the season, but that’s only because the FC men could only beat them to a 2-2 draw last Saturday at the Centennial Bowl. As for the women, they took a loss to the powerhouse NDC Ontario 1-2. Both teams will be out of town this weekend.
Guelph Storm (OHL): Three members of Storm heard their names called during the 2025 NHL Entry Draft: Quinn Beauchesne to the Pittsburgh Penguins, Grant Spada to the Tampa Bay Lightning and Charlie Paquette to the Dallas Stars. In terms of the current Storm team, General Manager George Burnett announced that they’ve been trading future draft picks with the Flint Firebirds.
Guelph Gryphons (OUA): You’re probably not thinking about hockey, but the University of Guelph is. It was announced that Gryphons Men’s Hockey is adding Jake Grimes and Ted Nichol as associate coaches for the 2025/26 season. If you’re interested in watching any OUA hockey games next season, you should be aware that Ontario University Athletics is updating the OUA.tv platform so that you will have to subscribe in order to watch football, women's and men's hockey, and women's and men's basketball.
Guelph Silvercreeks (OBA): It was a close one last week, but the Kitchener Jr. Panthers were just a better team (and given their 9-3 record why wouldn’t they?). The Silvercreeks started out strong scoring four runs combined in the third and fourth innings, but the Panthers surpassed them with a total of four runs scored in the back half of the game, which combined with the two runs in the first half allowed the Panthers to send Guelph home with a slim 5-6 victory. Last night, the SIlvercreeks were in Waterloo.
Guelph Sports Hall of Fame: Nominations for the Guelph Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2026 are now open. The deadline to submit is October 31 at 5 pm.
