Guelph Royals (IBL): We did it! We made it to the final round of the playoffs! Last Thursday, the Royals punched their ticket with an overwhelming 12-3 victory against the Welland Jackfish who finished number one over all at the end of the regular season and were the defending champions. The Royals must now defeat the number two Barrie Baycats if they’re to win the Jack and Lynne Dominico Cup, and they’re not off to a very good start. Game one on Sunday went to the Baycats in Barrie 10-12, and game two happened last night at Hastings Stadium with Barrie winning a much slimmer blowout 0-3. Game three is on Thursday.
Guelph Storm (OHL): A good first pre-season weekend gave way to something more disappointing in weekend number two. The first face-off at home against the Peterborough Petes did not go our way with a 3-4 defeat in a shoot out; both sides were evenly matched with goaltenders Colin Ellsworth and Zach Jovanovski each securing 31 saves. The next day, Oshawa came to town and it was the Generals turn to beat the Storm, which they did in three periods by a score of 5-6. The Storm are taking the week off, and then next weekend they will be in Peterborough for a re-match against the Petes. The regular season begins at home on Friday September 27 against the Attack, which will be preceded by Fan Fest in Old Quebec Street starting at 4 pm.
Guelph Gryphons (OUA): The football Gryphons may have taken their first loss of the season up the road in Waterloo against the Golden Hawks, but rugby was doing their part. Liam Bowman and Taylor McKnight were named the Gryph’s Locker Athletes of the Week after the men’s rugby team dominated the Hawks in their season opener 52-17, and the women’s team moved up two places to be ranked number two in USPORTS after their second win against the Varsity Blues last weekend 96-0. Both soccer teams are also showing their stuff after both the men and women’s teams beat visiting Algoma last weekend, though the women went a little harder winning 12-0 compared to men’s more modest 2-0 win.
