Guelph Storm (OHL): It’s been an appropriate whirlwind for the Storm in the last week. Last Thursday, the team went down to Windsor where they handily dominated the Spitfires 5-1, but back home on Friday it was a very tight game against the Saginaw Spirit where the Storm lost in overtime 4-5. Sunday’s game also ended 5-4, but this time it was the Storm with a morale boosting win over Highway #7 rivals the Kitchener Rangers. Going into Tuesday night’s rematch at the Aud, the Storm had managed to rebound to fourth place in the Midwest Division, and capturing a playoff spot in the Western Conference. As for that Tuesday game in Kitchener, the Storm scored 5 again, but the Rangers only got 2!
Guelph Gryphons (OUA): Playoff action continues as the school year winds down. First, volleyball dreams ended when the men’s team could not find a way around Sherbrooke in the U SPORTS Quarterfinals and lost 0-3 and then they took another loss, this time 2-3, after five hard-fought sets against Trinty Western. There was some good news though because Jonathan Pickett was named a U SPORTS Second Team All-Canadian for the second time, making him only the second Gryphon to ever get that distinction, and closer to home he was named the Gryph's Locker Athletes of the Week. In other news, Gryphon curlers finished in sixth place at the U SPORTS Curling Championships at the University of New Brunswick
High School Athletics (OFSSA): Benny Remillard, a 15-year-old wrestler from Centennial CVI in Guelph, won gold in the cadet men’s 48kg category at the Canadian Wrestling Championships in Ottawa last weekend. This is the second major honour for Remillard recently after he won the OFSAA championship last month.
Guelph United FC (League1 Ontario): The women’s team has committed more players for the coming season including forward Tiffany Johnston and defender Sarah Van Der Laan, in addition to Darby FC midfielder Violet Hipkin who’s also coming to the Royal City. Meanwhile, midfielder Kate Knafelc will be back for her third season with the United.
